Students interested in science, nature, education, and community engagement are encouraged to attend the Explainer Program Open House hosted by the New York Botanical Garden (NYBG). This event is designed for students who are considering applying to become a Spring 2027 Intern Explainer and would like to learn more about the program and its many benefits.
The Open House will be held on Saturday, November 7, 2026, from 1:00 PM to 2:00 PM at the Dodge Activity Center in the Everett Children's Adventure Garden at NYBG. Attendees will have the chance to meet current participants, hear firsthand about their experiences, and ask questions about the application process and program expectations.
The NYBG Explainer Program provides high school students with meaningful opportunities to explore environmental science and education while developing valuable leadership skills. Participants help facilitate hands-on activities for children and families, collect scientific data throughout the Everett Children's Adventure Garden, and learn about topics such as botany, climate literacy, horticulture, environmental stewardship, and science communication.
Students who join the program can also:
- Earn 125 volunteer service hours
- Develop leadership, teaching, and communication skills
- Gain experience working with the public
- Participate in citizen science projects
- Join a community of peers who share an interest in science, nature, and education
The program welcomes curious and motivated students from a variety of backgrounds. No prior expertise in science or public speaking is required. Students who are eager to learn, work collaboratively, and contribute to their community are encouraged to attend the Open House and explore whether the Explainer Program is the right fit for them.
Interested students should RSVP by October 30, 2026, using the QR code provided on the flyer.
