History & Traditions

Founded in 1997, The Bronx School for Law, Government & Justice (LGJ) was established as a dynamic 9-12 public school that blends law-related studies with real-world learning experiences. Under the leadership of founding principal David C. Banks—who later became Chancellor of the NYC Department of Education—LGJ began its journey by sharing a building with Health Opportunity High School, located at 350 Gerard Ave, Bronx, NY. In 2004, LGJ moved to its current home at 244 East 163rd Street, where it continues to thrive. The school celebrated its first graduating class in 2001, with 47 students.

LGJ’s origin story is rooted in advocacy, vision, and community strength. When plans emerged to build a courthouse in the neighborhood, local residents—alongside the Urban Assembly—demanded that a school be built next door to serve the youth of the Bronx. Leading the charge, Mr. Banks and a group of determined students went to City Hall to make their voices heard. Their efforts were instrumental in securing the creation of The Bronx School for Law, Government and Justice, ensuring that education stood proudly beside justice in the heart of the community.

LGJ has been guided by four visionary principals: David C. Banks, Meisha Porter (also a future Chancellor), Johanie Hernandez, and current principal Vernon Johnson. The school is known for its commitment to civic engagement, academic excellence, and student empowerment.

LGJ Traditions That Bring Us Together

  • Student Awards Ceremonies – Recognizing the dedication, growth, and accomplishments of our students across academics, leadership, and service.

  • Ice Cream Socials – Sweet moments of connection and fun that foster school spirit and friendship.

  • Senior Convocation – A heartfelt send-off honoring our graduating class and their journey ahead.

  • Celebration of Lights – A winter gathering that highlights joy, hope, and cultural traditions from around the world.

  • Culture Day – A vibrant showcase of the diverse backgrounds, languages, and heritage that make LGJ unique.

  • Black History Month Assemblies – Powerful student-led presentations and performances that honor Black excellence, history, and resilience.

These traditions reflect LGJ’s commitment to inclusivity, pride, and student voice. They’re more than events—they’re part of what makes LGJ feel like home.
