Civic Literacy Across the Curriculum

Building on our commitment to anti-racism and social justice, Bronx LGJ defines civic literacy as the knowledge, skills, and attitudes that students need to work effectively in a diverse society to create more just and equitable workplaces, communities, and social institutions. This includes, but is not limited to, preparing our students to see, name, and challenge issues of power, inequity, and oppression by focusing on positive identity development; learning valuable skills that allow students to “read the world” through layered “texts”; developing intellectual capacity through an interdisciplinary approach to planning and learning; and recognizing and acting upon inequities produced by larger systems of power.

Essential Question: How can we create the instructional conditions to inquire thoughtfully, create boldly, and collaborate purposefully?
